After Sodankylä, we continue our journey north. The E75 road curves along the river, crossing a low ridge formation with pines. There are also lush willow-lined tributaries of River Kitinen, almost impenetrable floodplains, which as such stand for a field biologist’s nightmare.

Personally, I have only faint recollections of that day. Only a vague, blurry picture comes to mind: a grey tin dish bowl full of flopping, silvery, freshly caught fish. You could reel in as big catches from the River Kemijoki as you ever wanted.

Around midnight, towards the end of April, there’s a few hours of darkness in the forest. I’m gawking at the young saplings, barely discernible against the dark night sky.

A FOREST LAPP IN THE TASK SCAPE

I feel a little nervous. I stop the car and decide to walk the rest of the way. In the boreal coniferous forest there’s a new-looking forest road that seems to turn to the right direction. Nevertheless, approaching the site by any other means than on foot would feel wrong. Very disrespectful.
